Abstract

|
A case of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis who was treated at Wonju Christian Hospital recently is presented with the literature review.
This case was admitted because of chronic duodenal ulcer complicated with pyloric stonosis. Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis with pneumoperitoneum was diagnosed preoperatively by roentgenologic examination and the associated partial.intestizial obstruction due to adhesive omental band was found at the time of operation.
This patient was treated by abdominal truncal vagotomy and hernigastrectomy for the chronic duodenal ulcer and by segmental resection of the ileum, and end-to-end anastomosis for the pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis and the complicated partial intestinal obstruction. The postoperative recovery was uneventful.
Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis is a rare lesion usually associated with obstructive and ulcerative conditions of the gastrointestinal tract or with obstructive pulmonary disease. Its treatment is based on individual findings and should follow conservatism unless and until the complications supervene, such as mechanical bowel obstruction, rectal bleeding or tension pneumoperitoneum.
